People In Need Our club sponsors needy families each year though the Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Christmas Mother Program and members have worked at the distribution center. Gift and supply showers have been held for battered women’s shelters, bag lunches have been donated to the homeless, nursing home residents have been visited, and usable clothes have been donated to the Powhatan Clothes Closet.
Helping Locally Our club participates in the GFWC Virginia State Fair Program each year, providing volunteers for the Educational Exposition. In support of the Lee District Project, our members serve as docents for Virginia's Executive Mansion. Members have participated in Relay for Life, Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, Alzheimer’s Memory Walk, flu shot clinics, public radio and television pledge drives, Habitat for Humanity home building, and as hostesses for house tours benefiting the Richmond Symphony and the Powhatan Historical Society. Edible treats have been provided for area poll workers and cards have been sent to our military serving overseas. Art bags are prepared and donated each year for pediatric cancer patients and knitted caps have been made for adult cancer patients.
Education Two area elementary schools have been a focus of our club and they have received significant support. Activities include one-on-one tutoring and reading books onto audiotapes to assist the students. School supplies for teachers and students, as well as clothing and treasure chest items, are donated throughout the year and treats are provided for teacher appreciation days.
Fund Raising Funds to support our charities have been raised in a variety of ways. The sale of our historic Midlothian afghan has been a long-standing project and we also sell an historic Chesterfield County afghan. Our club provides assistance to the GFWC Bon Air Junior Woman’s Club, wrapping gifts at their Chesterfield Towne Center gift wrap booth. Members work at the Bizarre Bazaar each year with all earnings going directly to our club. We have held two fashion shows in cooperation with Talbot’s and provided hostesses for the opening of Stoney Point Fashion Park. Silent auctions and yard sales have been held and we have sold a wide variety of items including gift wrap, peanuts, calendars, flower bulbs and jewelry.
